"The best piece of advice that I've received to manage my MS is to take care of myself."
Julie — MS LifeLines® Nurse Specialist
Julie, an MS LifeLines Nurse specialist since 2003, says she tries to make a difference every day. Julie tries to help not only patients on Rebif® (interferon beta-1a) therapy, but others in their lives, as well. "We need to be very careful and really listen to what else is going on in their homes," she says. Julie finds strengthening the bond between MS patients and their care partners particularly rewarding.
"There are many days that patients or their caregivers have told me that I called at just the right time. One patient was crying because she missed some injections and hadn't been motivated to continue treatment. She just needed someone to talk to and get back on track. She wasn't aware of some of the resources and management tips that can make a huge difference."
Believing firmly in the mind-body connection, Julie tries to help patients get their day-to-day affairs organized, so their minds are free and can stay strong. "I listen to what the real issues are and guide them to resources like financial help, counseling, and resources such as respite for care givers." She also reminds patients of the importance of keeping their neurologist and PCP informed.
With 21 years in nursing, Julie's many years of experience help her to listen and guide patients she talks with in the right direction. She lives by a simple motto: "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and the present is a special gift." Julie's gift to MS patients is hope.
